2018 CHASSIS CAB
Durability
DURABILITY FOR THE LONG HAUL.
The 2018 Ford Super Duty is the toughest, hardest-working generation of Class 3-5 chassis cab we’ve ever built. The cab is made of high-strength, military-grade, aluminum alloy that’s lighter than steel yet incredibly strong. Some of that weight savings went into making the axles, chassis and steering components stronger. Plus, the fully boxed under-cab and C-channel aft-of-cab frame is built of 95 percent high-strength steel. That means hauling and towing capability you can depend on to deliver every workday.
HIGH-STRENGTH, ALUMINUM-ALLOY BODY
The Ford Super Duty is the only Class 3-5 chassis cab with a high-strength, military-grade, aluminum-alloy body. It’s lighter than the previous generation steel yet immensely strong. And it’s also more dent- and ding-resistant and not subject to rust corrosion. Beneath this lighter body is a fully boxed under-cab frame and a C-channel aft-of-cab frame built of 95 percent high-strength steel.
TOUGH AND DURABLE HIGH-STRENGTH STEEL FRAME
Super Duty Chassis Cab features a fully boxed under-cab and C-channel aft-of-cab frame made of 95 percent high-strength steel with up to 10 crossmembers (eight through-welded). Torsional rigidity is eight times greater than the previous generation. The C-channel frame easily accommodates a wide range of upfits from flat and dump beds to wrecker, service and delivery bodies.
AXLES, CHASSIS AND DRIVELINE COMPONENTS
The frame of today’s Ford Super Duty is stronger than the previous generation’s. And so the axles, suspension, brakes, driveline and transfer case are larger and heftier for greater strength and capability. Super Duty chassis cabs are more than up to the task of taking on the toughest jobs in the most demanding industries.
TOUGH, HEFTY BRAKES
The components of the 4-wheel anti-lock brakes in today’s generation of F-450/F-550 models are larger than before, with the largest rotors in their class — and for two important reasons. You want them to provide the sure stopping power you expect when you’re out on the job hauling tons of equipment or cargo. And you want them to last, because having to replace brakes too often can be drag on your bottom line.
OVER 12 MILLION MILES OF TESTING
We committed this latest generation of the Super Duty to over 12 million miles of testing, under conditions simulated and real. We also put prototype models in the hands of people like you, working in some of the most demanding industries. Our goal: Build a line of Class 3-5 trucks with extraordinary performance and capability.
ENGINEERED FOR EXTREMES
We evaluated the Super Duty on computers and dynamometers in the lab, then tested it at the proving grounds and on public roads and highways at temperatures from -20 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. We conducted thermal shocks that swung ambient temperature 250 degrees Fahrenheit in under two minutes, as well as powertrain tests that replicated going up a six-degree grade over 500 miles. We subjected Super Duty to four-post frame twists, gravel, dust, water, salt brine, mud baths and even intentionally tested with worn or broken parts. We’re talking here about extreme conditions that often went far beyond what you would likely encounter on your toughest of jobs.
Capability
CAPABILITY YOU CAN RELY ON, ALL DAY, EVERY DAY
When you want to get the most done, on the job site or over the road, the Class 3-5 chassis cab to depend on is the Ford Super Duty with its ruggedly engineered fully boxed steel under-cab frame — plus beefy front suspension, chassis and driveline components. Today’s Super Duty is not only the most capable of any previous generation, but it also out-hauls and out-tows every other vehicle in its class.
BEST IN CLASS PAYLOAD
With its high-strength, military-grade, aluminum-alloy body that’s lighter than any previous Super Duty generation’s, plus a frame that has a rigidity eight times stiffer than the previous design’s, the Ford Super Duty Chassis Cab offers higher-than-ever payload ratings with a maximum 12,730-lb. rating that’s best in its class.
BEST-IN-CLASS TOWING
When the job calls for towing huge loads, the Super Duty Chassis Cab lets you do just that — and better than any other vehicle in its class — thanks to the heavier and stronger frame, components and driveline of today’s Super Duty generation.
BEST-IN-CLASS GCWR OF 40,000 LBS.
Take the features that make the Super Duty Chassis Cab the toughest generation we’ve ever built. The fully boxed under-cab and redesigned C-channel aft-of-cab frame built of 95 percent high-strength steel. The heftier components of the suspension, chassis and driveline. Now add the outstanding hauling and towing capabilities of this all-new Super Duty and you’ve got the highest gross combination weight rating — 40,000 pounds — of any Class 3-5 chassis cab built today.
BEST-IN-CLASS FGAWR OF 7,500 LBS.
Upfit bigger than any previous generation of the Ford Super Duty Chassis Cab. Some of the weight savings from the high-strength, military-grade, aluminum-alloy body were reinvested into heavier-duty axle and front suspension components, providing for an increased maximum front gross axle weight rating of 7,500 lbs.
AFT-AXLE FRAME EXTENSION
The available aft-axle frame extension allows an upfitted body to accommodate additional equipment through extended length. It’s available on F-450 and F-550 Regular Cab chassis models, providing 42 inches of extension with the 145-in. wheelbase and 32 inches of extension with the 169-in. wheelbase.
ADVANCETRAC WITH RSC AND TRAILER SWAY CONTROL
Super Duty comes with standard AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control™ (RSC ) and trailer sway control on single- and dual-rear-wheel models. Both systems use gyroscopic sensors and apply a combination of reduced engine power and selective wheel braking to help maintain control of the vehicle and the trailer in tow.
Power
THE MUSCLE YOU NEED TO STRENGTHEN YOUR BUSINESS.
Super Duty Chassis Cab gas engines — the 6.2L V8 (F-350) and 6.8L V10 (F-450/F-550) — deliver all the power you’d need for the tough everyday jobs you face on the job site or on the road. Teamed with the proven Ford TorqShift SelectShift 6-speed automatic, both engines can be equipped with the available Live-Drive power takeoff (PTO) provision with Mobile Mode. For heavy-duty diesel performance, the latest generation of the available Power Stroke Turbo Diesel V8 is the most powerful ever in a Ford Super Duty Class 3-5 chassis cab.
6.7L POWER STROKE TURBO DIESEL V8
The latest generation of the available B20-capable 6.7L Power Stroke Turbo Diesel V8 delivers 330 horsepower and 750 lb.-ft. of torque. The Power Stroke features a unique inverse-flow configuration: The exhaust manifolds and turbocharger are mounted between the cylinder heads above the engine block. This inboard configuration allows a large single turbocharger to be mounted closer to the exhaust manifolds for faster air displacement and more power. Another notable feature is the compacted graphite iron engine block that is stronger yet lighter than cast iron.
6.8L TRITON GAS V10
The class-exclusive 6.8L Triton V10 is the standard gas engine in Super Duty XL and XLT F-450/F-550 chassis cabs. It’s teamed with the proven Ford TorqShift SelectShift 6-speed automatic transmission and offers the available Live-Drive power takeoff (PTO) provision with Mobile Mode.
6.2L FFV GAS V8
Torque rules in big work trucks pulling big loads. And no other gas-powered Class 3-5 chassis cab delivers as much torque (430 lb.-ft.) as the Super Duty 6.2L V8, standard in the F-350. The 6.2L has tuning and camshaft configurations designed to increase peak torque at lower rpm. The optional Live-Drive power takeoff (PTO) provision with Mobile Mode is available with the 6.2L engine.
TORQSHIFT 6-SPEED TRANSMISSION
The Ford TorqShift SelectShift 6-speed automatic transmission delivers high-torque performance and dependability. Big, strong gears can easily handle the heavy torque demands of the turbo diesel and gas engines. Fewer rpm are required because the torque converter locks up at lower speeds. The TorqShift offers SelectShift and Tow/Haul features. SelectShift has two modes: Progressive Range Select that limits the range of gears to lock out overdrive, plus Full Manual control. Tow/Haul selects the gear that minimizes gear hunting on uphills. On a downhill, it keeps the vehicle from upshifting and gaining speed, reducing reliance on brake pressure to slow down.
CLASS-EXCLUSIVE LIVE-DRIVE PTO
The available class-exclusive Live-Drive power takeoff (PTO) provision with Mobile Mode lets you power an aftermarket snowplow, pump, compressor or other accessory. The PTO provision is available across the entire engine line-up. An output gear connects directly to the engine crankshaft to power your PTO anytime the engine is running, whether the truck is in motion or stopped. Another big feature is “split-shaft” capability (diesel only) that allows multiple accessories to operate at the same time when the truck is stopped.
SMART DIESEL ENGINE EXHAUST BRAKING
The 6.7L Power Stroke Turbo Diesel incorporates a smart exhaust brake function. When activated with a button on the instrument panel, the engine brake restricts the turbocharger’s exhaust flow to generate back pressure and slow the vehicle. The main benefit is greater control while traveling downhill, regardless of vehicle load or road grade. Also, because the engine brake helps minimize having to apply pedal pressure, brake fade and lining wear are reduced, lowering the cost of maintenance. Three settings are available: On, Off and Auto. The Auto setting modulates engine braking as needed to help maintain the speed you want based on accelerator and brake pedal use.
ADVANCED FUEL CAPABILITY (GAS ENGINES)
Compressed natural gas (CNG) and propane are alternative fuels to unleaded gasoline with the CNG/Propane Gaseous Engine Prep Package for Super Duty gas-powered models — available with the 6.2L V8 (F-350) and with the 6.8L V10 (F-450/F-550). The CNG/Propane Package with additional aftermarket upfits provides bi-fuel capability, enabling these engines to run on either liquefied propane gas or unleaded gas.
Productivity
A TOUGH TRUCK DESIGNED TO MAKE YOUR JOB EASY.
Today’s Ford Super Duty Chassis Cab is more than just tougher than the previous generation. It’s also designed to make your job easy with its spacious cab, beefy chassis components, heavy-duty suspension and a host of other productivity features. Super Duty can also help enhance your bottom line from the outset by helping upfitters get your vehicle body completed and on the job as quickly as possible.
PROGRAMMABLE UPFITTER INTERFACE MODULE (UIM)
Super Duty has an available class-exclusive factory-installed programmable upfitter interface module (UIM) that easily allows a direct Controller Area Network (CAN) programmable logic interface to control devices quickly and simply by using a laptop or notebook. With the complexity of vehicle electrical systems, upfitters need to properly and consistently connect their electrical equipment to a vehicle’s CAN buses or ports.
SIX FACTORY-INSTALLED AUXILIARY UPFITTER SWITCHES
Six standard factory-installed auxiliary upfitter switches include two 40-amp switches (ignition on or off) plus four 25-amp switches (ignition on). What’s more, the switches with fuses and associated relays are integrated into the new overhead console/storage compartment. Upfitter switches are a convenient way to connect a variety of aftermarket accessories (such as a winch, lights, strobes, two-way radio) to the vehicle’s electrical system. Because they’re factory-installed, there’s no need to cut into the truck’s electrical system when installing accessories. Convenient, easy to use and reliable.
THREE CAB STYLES
The Ford Super Duty is well known for providing excellent comfort over long hours spent at the wheel every workday. Convenience is excellent too, with features such as the six upfitter switches located for ease of use in an overhead console. There’s available rear under-seat storage in the SuperCab and a fold-flat/locking load floor in the Crew Cab. And among available features are a modified sine 110V/400W AC power outlet, rear view camera prep kit, inflatable rear outboard safety belts (Crew Cab), and enhanced SYNC 3 connectivity system.
DEF TANK LEVEL GAUGE (DIESEL ENGINE)
Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) is a nonhazardous solution, 32.5 percent urea and 67.5 percent deionized water. Essential to diesel engine operation, DEF is sprayed into the vehicle’s exhaust stream to break down noxious nitrogen oxide emissions into harmless nitrogen and water. DEF is stored in its own tank with a blue filler cap because it must be kept separate from diesel fuel. Instead of using a warning light on the dash to alert you to DEF running low, Super Duty provides a digital gauge that gives you a real-time measurement of how much DEF is stored.
